ABSTRACT

Kim, Jung-Nam. 2003. The Meaning and Usage of the Korean Pronoun ‘우리’. Korean Semantics, 13. The purpose of this paper is to examine the meaning and usage of the Korean 1st person pronoun ‘우리’. In this study we used the Standard Korean Grand Dictionary and the Korean learners corpus to descript and explain the detailed meanings and usages of ‘우리’. We examined closely the meaning that the Standard Korean Grand Dictionary presents. And we analyzed the examples that ‘우리’ is used in the respective contexts of the Korean learners corpus. In this paper we focus to the teachers and learners of Korean as a foreign language especially whose native language is English. Because they seem to be unfamiliar to the implied plural meaning of ‘우리’. Conclusionally we pointed out the four kinds of meaning of ‘우리’. The first meaning of ‘우리’ is connected to numbers. ‘우리’ is a plural pronoun. But in every conversational situation, speakers cannot be plural. Therefore the Korean speakers use the pronoun ‘우리’ in order to indicate himself and the persons related to the speaker himself contextually. The second meaning of ‘우리’ is derived from the first meaning. As ‘우리’ implies the plurality, ‘우리’ has not dishonorific meaning. Speakers can dishonour himself but another men. The third meaning of ‘우리’ is concerned with “including hearers”. At these two occasions, namely in second and third meaning, ‘우리’ is contrasted to ‘저희’. ‘저희’ has dishonorific meaning and excludes hearers. The last meaning that we emphasize is “familiarity”. At this point ‘우리’ is contrasted to ‘내/나의’. Speakers use ‘우리’ instead of ‘내/나의’ in order to modify whom they have some familiarity about.
