AB - Starting from the well-established assumption that the case frame plays a crucial role in the classification of adjectives in Korean (Yoo 1998, Kim 2005), a question we raise in this research is: Does the case frame(s) of an adjective really contribute to the specification of its semantic properties, and if so, how does it do it? In this paper, we will propose that the concept of case frame set, which is based on, but still different from, case frames, plays a significant role in the semantic classification of Korean adjectives. An adjective can have one or more case frames associated with it, and the set of case frames associated with a particular adjective is called a case frame set. Thus, our study shows in concrete terms how and to what extent case frame information can be relevant to the semantic characterization of adjectives, thereby providing a novel and interesting example of mapping or restriction between linguistic forms and their meaning.
