This study investigates the differences between the negative expression ‘-지 않다’ and its reduced form ‘-잖다’ in terms of phonetic, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics. The purpose of this study is to suggest more efficient pragmatic instruction method for Korean language teaching. In this purpose, this study employs the corpus analysis to investigate the differences between ‘-지 않다’ and ‘-잖다’ and attempts to find their application methods in Korean language teaching. This study examines the relative frequencies of appearance of each expression in the written corpus and spoken corpus. This study also analyses their respective semantic, morphologic and syntactic characteristics. This study also demonstrates the practical uses of ‘-지 않다’ and ‘-잖다’ in the current Korean language textbooks and suggests an alternative order and methods. This study tries to demonstrate the fact that the negative expressions can have multiple implications, and that it is necessary for Korean language teaching to deal with this differences. In addition to the negative expressions, this study recommends the application of the commonality and dissimilarity between the original form and its reduced form of other expressions in Korean language teaching.
