ABSTRACT

Yi, Miji. 2015. Study on the meaning and use of ‘-kumeon/ -kuman’. Korean Semantics, 48. ‘-kumeon' and ‘-kuman' are exclamatory sentence endings in Korean language. Usually exclamatory sentence endings share similar meanings and contexts so there have been many studies which aimed to distinguish the meanings and use of the exclamatory endings. However, ‘-kumeon' and ‘-kuman' are considered to have distinguishing characteristics in the relationship of speaker and listener and to show low frequency of use compared to other exclamatory endings, and also ‘-kuman' is usually treated as a wrong variation of ‘-kumeon', so their meanings and functions have received little attention from the researchers so far. However, this study noted that ‘-kuman' is widely used in the spoken language and it shows distinctive features from ‘-kumeon' in meaning and use. Therefore, this study analysed the usage of ‘-kumeon' and ‘-kuman' utilizing the corpus of spoken Korean language and tried to identify the meanings and use of them. The following are main findings from the corpus analysis. Firstly, ‘-kumeon' and ‘-kuman' share the same meaning which is ‘perception or realization of a new fact' but ‘-kuman' is more widely used in the spoken language. Secondly, ‘-kuman' is usually used among young people while ‘-kumeon' is used among older people. Lastly, ‘-kuman' has an additional meaning which is ‘contrast' and in this case ‘-kuman' is used to express a contrast of preceding clause and following clause or to show speaker's contrary view against the listener's.
