ABSTRACT

Jo, Kyeong-Sun. 2015. A Study on the Alternation ‘Wa/Kwa’ Noun Phrase and ‘Eul/Reul’ Noun Phrase. Korean Semantics, 49. This study sets out to approach and discuss the grammar category of "Wa(와)" anew in that there are syntactic connections between “민수가 수희를 만나다.” and “민수가 수희와 만나다.” and that the thematic roles of "수희" are not different between the two sentences. The discussions about the syntactic functions of "Wa(와)" are as follows: first, it seems to have both functions of conjunctive and common case; second, it seems to have only the functions of conjunctive; and finally, it is considered as a postposition. However, there are difficulties with the treatment of thematic roles, changes to the meanings of sentences according to postpositional particle replacement, inversion of noun phrases, and treatment of postposition category. The present study saw that verbs of reciprocity quality demanded "operator-operator" or "operatee/beneficiary-theme" for thematic roles and that an operator or operatee/beneficiary, the top-level thematic role, was connected to the subject with a theme connected to an object. An essential component of a sentence, the "Wa(와)" noun phrase is an argument to which a theme thematic role is granted. When it shows only a grammatical case, the "Reul(를)" noun phrase will appear. When reciprocity as a unique meaning is prominent, the "Reul(를)" noun phrase can be replaced with the "Wa(와)" noun phrase.
