ABSTRACT

Lim, Taewoon. 2015. A Study on Genre-Based Writing Education for Korean Language Learners through Analysis of Text Structure-Focoused on the Structure of Persuasive Writing. Korean Semantics, 49. The purpose of this study is to suggest genre-based teaching methods for the improvement of persuasive writing skills of Korean language learners. The study analyzes student writing samples through micro-structure, macro-structure, and ultra-structure analysis. The results are as follows; first, the micro-structure analysis of spelling and use of conjunctions and case markers did not reflect any great difficulty or problem. Most of the student errors could be corrected through feedback. Second, macro-structure analysis focused on Korean learners’ understanding of formal writing genres, such as persuasive text. Though students may show understanding of a particulare genre, that knowledge was not consistently reflected in practice. For example, unnatural use of discourse markers interfered with conveyance of the central idea of a paragraph. Finally ultra-structure analysis examined students’ methods of argument development. Most of the student texts lacked the components necessary to form a persuasive text. The results of this study confirm that genre-based writing education is the most effective method of teaching writing to Korean language learners. This study proposes methods for conducting effective lessons on persuasive writhing through application of standard model of genre-based writing.
