ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of microaggression experienced by marriage-based immigrant women on their life satisfaction, and to examine the moderating effects of social capital (trust, networks, and norms of reciprocity). This study analyzed the secondary data collected from 291 marriage-based immigrant women residing in Daegu, using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The main findings are as follows. First, microaggression experienced by marriage-based immigrant women had a negative effect on their life satisfaction. Second, among several components of social capital, bridging trust functioned as a moderating factor that buffered the negative impact of microaggression on life satisfaction. Based on these findings, this study suggests policy and practical implications for reducing microaggression and improving the life satisfaction of marriage-based immigrant women in Korea. First, it is necessary to develop a culturally appropriate and context-sensitive scale to measure and understand microaggressions experienced by married immigrant women in the Korean context. Second, considering the buffering role of bridging trust, it is necessary to develop policy and programs that engage immigrant women in local communities. Third, there is a need for comprehensive education and awareness programs not only for immigrants themselves, but also for public officials, social workers, and the general public in Korean society.
