ABSTRACT

The relationship between Thutmose III and Hatshepsut is a topic thathas been discussed for a long time. It was suggested that Thutmose IIIwas resentful of his stepmother, since Hatshepsut usurped the throne forthe first two decades of Thutmose’s reign. Thus, after her death, Thutmosedemolished his stepmother’s vestige with vindictive fury. However, thetraditional theories have been recently revised. It has become accepted thatThutmose played important roles as a pharaoh even during the period ofHatshepsut, and that Thutmose’s project to demolish the monuments ofHatshepsut did not begin until about twenty years after her death. Thiswas conducted not because of animosity, but for a political purpose relatedto the succession of Amenhotep II. In this article, based on this acceptedsuggestion, the activities of the two pharaohs at Karnak will be examined, and how the past was recognised by Thutmose and how this recognitionwas represented in his later practices will be discussed.
