ABSTRACT

This article aims to compare the key features of the literature of Antonio Tabucchi and Fernando Pessoa, in particular by examining a novel by Tabucchi, Requiem (1991). In Requiem, which involves a lot of allusions on Pessoa, we can never clearly distinguish between fantasy and reality, dream and reality, life and death, conscious and unconscious etc. But from there, we can deduce the major characteristics of two writers: one is exploring the world of dreams and fantasy, the other is writing itself in the plural split. Many poems and works of prose by Pessoa are filled with the transcript of the dream world; the works of Tabucchi are often found on the borders between fantasy world and real world. In addition, Tabucchi and Pessoa possess both a lively awareness of the multiplicity of the self, so that in particular, Pessoa makes a perfect plural writing, producing more than seventy heteronym.
