ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to identify the reason why Koreans chose and developed Songpyeon as the representative food of Chuseok (a traditional holiday). The background of Songpyeon as a Chuseok food can first be found in the traditional food culture in which Songpyeon and other symbolic foodstuffs were presented to the hard working farmers and laborers at a certain time each year as part of the farming ritual of ‘giving thanks for farming’. In addition, rice self-sufficiency, the urban migration of the rural population, the expansion of Chuseok holidays, and the Confucian tradition which values handcrafted rice cakes as memorial service food also provided the backgrounds for the use of Songpyeon. As these factors became synthesized, Songpyeon became the representative food of Chuseok from the 1970s. It is hoped that the present study will contribute to the understanding of Korean festivals and traditional food culture in this era of globalization and multi-culturalism.
