ABSTRACT

Giuseppe Tucci, the most prominent Tibetologist of the twentieth century, has made a very substantial contribution in Asian Studies through his research, writings (that exceed several hundreds), and the objects that he has brought from the East. This paper will present an overview of Tucci’s life and work as an Italian Orientalist, with a particular focus upon the evaluations and criticism levelled at his work in relation to “Orientalism”, as defined by Edward Said in his equally entitled book of 1978. In analysing the criticism of Tucci’s work, and the reactions and responses to it, this paper aims to provide some suggestions for a comprehensive evaluation of the legacy that he has left.
