AB - This study intends to describe the meaning of the nominative case marker ‘irasyeo’ and examine its diachronic aspects by examining all examples of ‘irasyeo’ in Korean historical literature. This paper examines the characteristics of ‘irasyeo’ by paying attention to the following three ways.
First, the distribution of ‘irasyeo’ was confirmed by examining all examples of ‘irasyeo’. Through this, it could be clearly revealed that ‘irasyeo’ was a nominative case marker. Second, sentences featuring ‘irasyeo’ were carefully examined, including the context behind its used, and the text structure was also considered. Through this, it was possible to confirm that ‘irasyeo’ had the functions of qualification and exceptionality. Third, examination was carried out on cases of ‘irasyeo’ that appear in documents that were published several times with the same content at different times. Through this process, it was possible to grasp the period during which ‘irasyeo’ was actively used, and to observe an aspect of its extinction process. Through this study, characteristics of ‘irasyeo’ that had not been revealed until now were revealed more clearly through the understanding the synchronic characteristics and diachronic change patterns of ‘irasyeo’.
