ABSTRACT

Recent research suggests that the Victorian gender formation did not originate in isolation in the West but rather emerged through the interaction between the West and the others. The concept of the Victorian domesticity is also found to be slippery and ambiguous. This study traces the activities of foreign women—especially of female missionaries—of the Seoul Union in Joseon at the end of the nineteenth century. By examining the social and literary character of the activities, this paper demonstrates the complex dynamics of gender and culture, which influenced the development of distinct form of a “new woman.” As a foundation study of the subject, this paper also presents literature information and a chronological overview. In dealing with Shakespeare readings of the Seoul Union, it also confirms that Shakespeare was introduced into Korea before the twentieth century.
