ABSTRACT

In examining the poetry anthologies of the 1930s, this paper deals with, in particular, aspects of hansi written by women. Prior to modern times, hansi were generally written by upper-class men, and this trend lasted for a long time. However, in modern times, not only men but also women came to consume hansi, as poetry readers. In Dae-dong-poong-a and Cheong-gu-si-seon, which are both hansi anthologies, women’s poetry is placed in the appendix, but nevertheless this shows a willingness to publish women’s accumulated literary capabilities to the public. Furthermore, in the case of hansi collections translated into Korean (Modern Joseon Women Literature Anthology and Mang-woo-cho), they provided the public who had difficulty in interpreting sino Korean characters, especially more women readers, with an opportunity to enjoy hansi. In particular, by paying attention to the characteristics of women's hansi as lyric poems, it becomes possible to recognize women’s hansi before modern times as modern poetry, thereby giving them improved status. In the case of the only modern women’s poetry book, Modern Joseon Women Literature Anthology, it can be seen that the formation and growth of the base of modern women poetry was possible not only through modern poetry, but also through the coexistence of Korean traditional women hansi. This paper is meaningful in that it identified the role of hansi anthologies’ role in the 20th century, especially its position within the context of modern poetry. Although hansi was historically centered around upper-class men, the publication of 20th century hansi anthologies that included women’s hansi acted to provide women with a place in modern literature and introduce readers to women’s hansi.
