ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to comparatively analyze the criticisms of Li (理) put forward by Hong Daeyong, Jeong Yakyong, and Choi Hanki, and to examine the development of Confucian philosophy in the Late Joseon Dynasty accordingly. In developing their philosophies to overcome the chaotic situation of Joseon in the 18th and 19th centuries, different characteristics based on their original ways of thinking were revealed. A useful point to view to adopt in focusing on the commonalities among the different characteristics is to notice the distance from Neo-Confucianism, which is common to these philosophers. This paper, in particular, presents the criticism of Li that is common to Hong Daeyong, Jeong Yakyong, and Choi Hanki. While inheriting the philosophical structure of NeoConfucianism, from which derives their view of human beings and their view of politics in ontology, they criticize Li. Therefore, their criticism of Li forms the basis of differentiation throughout their philosophies, which is the focus of the discussion in this paper.
