ABSTRACT

This paper is designed to re-read <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon> in the context of the history of discourse on revenge that has been fulfilled since the Pre-Jin (秦) period, and to re-establish it as an important text in Chinese revenge theory in the premodern period. This will be accomplished through two papers. This is the first of papers, which aims to provide a basic overview of revenge narratives and topics of revenge in <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon> for a deeper analysis of the revenge theory of <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon>. To this end, Section 2 examines how Oh Jaseo was viewed and shaped in the Spring and Autumn-Warring States Period. This is because it provides a useful basis for examining how Sama Cheon (司馬遷) reinterpreted Oh Jaseo in his <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon>. In Section 3, I analyze the narrative of <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon> by following the content of <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon>. The contents of <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon> are divided into six parts, excluding the concise introduction to Oh Jaseo’s family. Of these, five parts are directly related to Oh Jaseo, I have analyzed their contents immanently. Section 4 is the conclusion of this paper. The above work will serve as a foundation for analyzing Sama Cheon’s revenge theory as reflected in <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon>, and as an example of rereading <Oh Jaseo Yeoljeon>
