ABSTRACT

The publishing of Jiaoyoulun consisted of three phases: first, the writing up of Matteo Ricci’s own manuscript or draft as the answer to prince Jian’an (建安王) in Nanchang (c.1595-1599); second, the official publication in Beijing (c.1601- 1606); finally, the incorporation of the version into the Tianxue chuhan (天學 初函) (1629) by Li Zhizao (李之藻, 1564/5-1630). However, the Tianxue chuhan edition, among others, has unusually attracted one-sided attention from researchers of Koreanology or Korean Studies on xixue (Western Learning). In this preliminary paper, the textual significance of Jiaoyoulun, which has been relatively neglected, is examined briefly by comparing its title and the publication forms of the codices and editions. The critical edition of Jiaoyoulun, which was made available by close cross-reading and detailed recension on the basis of the codex BNC, is necessary not only to review the reception and influence of Matteo Ricci, but also to identify if there have been any subtle misreadings or misunderstandings for centuries in reading Jiaoyoulun. Moreover, its standard form, a bilingual edition with apparatus criticus and apparatus fontium/similium, seems to be better and more worthwhile to readers and researchers for understanding a complicated history of the text of Jiaoyoulun.
