ABSTRACT

In the unprecedented chaos of the “modern transition period,” traditional intellectuals sought new ways of responding. Yoo In-seok (柳麟錫) proposed three norms to respond to the confusion of the time, the “Cheobyeonsamsa” (處變三事). However, there were many intellectuals who responded to the times in their own way. Hwang Byeong-joong (黃炳中) from Gwangyang also responded to the time of chaos in this way. When his family and relatives resisted colonialism, his family had to experience the pain of separation. Afterwards, he was arrested by Japanese police, making it difficult to guarantee his safety. His hometown, which has been preserved for generations, also belonged to others. This experience was reflected in his work, and his feelings were very well revealed at the time. In particular, it described the pain of colonial rule, the sorrow of separation, and feelings toward the family community very realistically. In short, his work is meaningful in that shows the reality of the modern transition period very well, depicting the pain of that era and the will to overcome reality.
