ABSTRACT

Inoue Tetsujirō (1855–1944)’s ‘theory of phenomena qua reality’ (genshō soku jitsuzai-ron) is widely regarded as the point of departure for what has come to be known as Japanese-style idealism. It is commonly assumed that German idealism served as one of the primary intellectual sources or philosophical foundations for this theory. However, for any system of thought to be legitimately considered as an intellectual source of another, it must at the very least inform or determine the latter’s fundamental problematics. In this paper, I argue that Inoue’s theory of phenomena qua reality does not share the central philosophical concerns of German idealism, and thus it cannot be said to derive its core orientation from that tradition. Furthermore, I contend that, in stark contrast to the orientation of German Idealism towards a philosophy of freedom, Inoue’s theory of phenomena qua reality bears the character of a metaphysical worldview that undergirds his totalitarian ethics of obedience, which, in turn, served to legitimate the kokutai ideology of fascist imperial Japan.
