ABSTRACT

This study conducts a philological analysis of the Tianzhuzonglun (天主總論, “General Discourse on the Lord of Heaven”) and its Latin translation, “De Deo et attributis divinis generalis discursus,” both preserved in the Notitia Linguae Sinicae by the Jesuit missionary Joseph Henri Marie de Prémare (1666–1736). While the Notitia Linguae Sinicae is known as one of the earliest Chinese grammars written in a Western language, the Chinese treatise and its Latin version have received little scholarly attention. The reverse translation of the Tianzhuzonglun into Latin constitutes a rare and valuable case of Sino–Western cultural and linguistic exchange, yet no critical edition has been available for research use. This paper compares fols. 167–180 of Prémare’s autograph manuscript (BnF, Chinois 9259) with later printed editions, identifying textual variants and errors in the editio princeps. On this basis, it establishes critical editions of both the Chinese text and its Latin translation, with an apparatus criticus documenting differences among versions and tracing the transmission history of the text
