AB - 본 연구의 목적은 17세기 중반기에 융성했던 혼합극, 즉 희극에 음악과 춤을 혼합하여 창작된 공연 양식의 흐름 속에서 몰리에르의 『프쉬케』를 대상으로 인간과 초자연의 경계성이 어떻게 서사로 구현되는지, 그리고 그것이 막간극을 구성하는 음악, 춤과기계장치에 의해 어떻게 완성되는지를 살펴보려는 것이다. 우선 당대 공연예술의 흐름안에서 프랑스적 전통을 토대로, 이탈리아 오페라를 비판적으로 수용하면서 형성된 혼합극의 역사를 살펴보고, 몰리에르의 기계극과 발레 희극을 그 맥락 안에 위치시키고자한다. 장르의 혼합을 엄격히 금하는 고전극작법의 규범에도 불구하고 관객들의 취향을만족시키며 그들에게 즐거움을 준다는 원칙에 충실한 그의 혼합극들은 1661년 『훼방꾼들』로부터 1673년 『상상병 환자』에 이르기까지 막간의 여흥거리에 지나지 않았던 음악과 춤을 극의 서사 안에 밀접히 통합시킴으로써 그 시대에 새로운 장르를 만들어낸다.
코르네유, 륄리, 키노의 협업으로 창작된 『프쉬케』는 당대 최대 규모의 스펙터클 극이었다. 프쉬케 신화를 주제로 한 이 작품에는 비너스, 아무르 같은 신들이 등장하여 기계장치를 통해 천상과 지상을 오르내리는 초자연적 능력을 드러내지만, 작품의 서사는 인간적 감정에 사로잡힌 비너스 여신이 지상에 내려와서 벌이는 복수극과, 어머니의 명령에 반하여 그 복수의 대상인 인간 프쉬케와 사랑에 빠지는 아무르의 ‘인간화된 드라마’ 로 전개된다. 작품에서 흥미로운 것은 인간과 초자연을 이분법적으로 나눠놓는 대신 그경계성을 두고 변증법적인 미학을 실현하고 있다는 점이다. 프쉬케의 ‘무감함’은 ‘비인간적’ 결점, 죄로 치부되며, 그녀가 인간적인 오만함과 호기심이라는 음욕으로 인한 시련 후 거듭나게 되는 것은 지극히 인간적인 감정인 사랑을 통해서이다. 이는 ‘사랑의 신’ 인 아무르의 경우도 동일한데 어머니 비너스 여신에의 반항은 ‘인간을 사랑에 빠지게 하는’ 자신의 역할을 수행하지 않음으로써 ‘자연을 무덤에 이르게 하는’, 즉 인간 세계를 혼란에 빠지게 하는 것으로 귀결된다. 이러한 갈등은 비너스 여신의 인간적인 모정에의 호소, 그리고 신들의 제왕인 주피터의 개입으로 프쉬케가 신계로 승천하는 결말로 해소될것이다. 막간극에 개입하는 기계장치와 음악은 이러한 서사와 밀접하게 조응하는 가운데 『프쉬케』를 최고의 총체극으로 완성하게 되지만 이후 몰리에르와 륄리의 결별, 몰리에르의 급작스러운 죽음에 의해 혼합극은 종말을 고하게 된다.
