AB - 이 논문의 목적은 20세기 후반을 대표하는 프랑스 극작가 베르나르-마리 콜테스의 『사막으로의 귀환』을 유령과 유령적인 것의 작용이라는 관점에서 분석하는 데 있다. 논문은 다음 단계로 진행된다. 우선 유령에 대한 사전적 정의와 데리다의 유령론을바탕으로, 유령의 일반적인 속성으로부터 도출되는 존재론적 특징들을 검토함으로써 유령적인 것의 개념을 정의한다. 이로써 유령적인 것이란 과거로부터의 귀환을 통해 현재의 시간과 질서에 균열을 내고, 현존과 부재의 경계를 흐리며, 살아 있는 자들의 삶과 공간을 사로잡아 조직하는 작용을 의미함을 확인한다. 다음으로는 이를 토대로 작품 속 유령적 형상들을 살펴본다. 사망한 아버지는 집과 인물을 사로잡는 유령으로서, 계보와 상속을 통해 과거의 질서가 희곡의 세계를 지배하게 만든다. 마리 유령은 실제 유령으로서무대 위에 육화하면서도, 전통적 유령의 역할과 성스러운 상징성을 모두 배반함으로써다양한 층위에서 전복적 의미를 생산해낸다. 마틸드와 흑인 공수부대원은 살아 있으면서도 유령적인 존재로서, 억압된 과거를 귀환시키고, 현재의 질서를 해체하며, 닫힌 세계를 불확정적인 미래를 향해 여는 힘으로 나타난다. 이 논문은 특히 『사막으로의 귀환』에서 실제 유령이 아닌 인물들 역시 유령적인 것으로 기능한다는 점에 주목함으로써, 작품의 중심에 문자 그대로의 유령보다 유령적인 것의 효과가 놓여 있음을 규명한다.
