AB - The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of location of dwelling (hereafter referred as dwelling site) in the Bronze Age from the geographical and topographical perspectives. For this purpose, altitude, gradient, distance from the river of water available for use and the difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use based on change of dwelling site over periods were analyzed targeting a total of 133 dwelling sites discovered in investigation area so far. The results were as follows: it was confirmed that dwelling sites were located on flat (or gentle slope) of hills distributed in Daejeon Basin. Low hills were composed of double-mica granite. Average altitude of dwelling sites was 71 m and the optimal altitudes were 50-63 m, 67-71 m and 82-90 m. Average gradient was 6° and the most optimal gradient was 0-7°. Average distance from dwelling sites to the 1st-2nd river (small scale river) of the river of water available for use was about 278 m and to the 3rd river or higher (medium scale river) of the river of water available for use was about 918 m. In addition, the average difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use from dwelling sites to the 1st-2nd river was about 15.8 m and the difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use from dwelling sites to the river of the 3rd or higher was about 25.3 m. Taken all together, it is shown that the inhabitants in Daejeon area in the Bronze Age preferred the place within comparatively not long distance from the river and the place with not big difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river in flat (or gentle slope) of the low hills in Daejeon Basin upon selecting the location of dwelling sites.
