ABSTRACT

This research shows that the port settlement has changed progressively since 1910 before the Japanese occupation period. After this period, the settlement had a formative period from 1910 to 1929. When it comes to the time before the Japanese occupation, the Kims of Gimhae entered the town and developed a village at 1885. The opening of Gunsan Port at 1899 became the new motive power to change the water traffic at Geum River. In addition, carrying marine products into the port and increasing goods' distribution changed this area a lot. As for the formation period of port settlement, intensified ferry function and increase of incoming and outgoing vessels changed Ippo dramatically. Strassendort was developed along the main street. A myeon office was located in Naseong-ri, Yanghwa-meyon at 1920. Then, as the number of incoming ships and the amount of fishes business were rising, the office moved to Ippo. This caused Ippo market to work as a genuine market. The access to the Ippo by the water traffic and new road had the gathering and distribution of the open sea marine product and inland grain far more intense. Through this study, It is confirmed that the formation of Ippo settlement intensified ferry function, and taking in marine product and opening Gunsan Port affected the formation of Ippo settlement.
