ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is the analysis about geographical research trend and task on formation of rural settlement in Taean peninsula region. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. In Taean peninsula region, the agglomerated settlement clearly appears despite the region is not the typical plain area and the dispersed settlement clearly appears despite the region is not the mountainous slash-and-burn field. On the whole the agglomerated settlement locates in the valley between two hill lands and the dispersed settlement locates in the easy slope of hill land in Taean peninsula region. In addition, the agglomerated settlement and the dispersed settlement very unusually coexist in Taean peninsula region. Amid these geographical research trends, the forest reclamation, the reclamation of small tidal bays and the expansion of settlements by family branch system were discovered as the formation factors of rural settlement including the agglomerated settlement and the dispersed settlement, and the dispersed settlement landscape was discovered to be formed socially and originated secondly from the agglomerated settlement, having quite a confrontation with the agglomerated settlement landscape in Taean peninsula region recently. Especially, it is estimated that the dispersed settlement in Taean peninsula region has been formed by the various natural and social factors induced by the regional characteristics. Also, it is appeared that in relation to the period of settlement formation in Taean peninsula region the formation of agglomerated settlement has been completed in the mid 18th century and the formation of dispersed settlement has been completed in the decades of 1930s and 1960s. Meanwhile, it is estimated that according to the author's field survey to identify the formation factor of rural settlement in Taean peninsula region the new types of the agglomerated settlement and the dispersed settlement differing from the traditional agglomerated settlement and the traditional dispersed settlement or the pseudo-agglomerated settlement and the pseudo-dispersed settlement have been formed. The pseudo-agglomerated settlement in Taean peninsula region is mainly composed with the case being not partly complied with the location principle of 'mountain behind village and river front village'(baisanimsoo, 背山臨水) having been conventionally applied to the traditional agglomerated settlement in Korea over a long period of time. The pseudo-dispersed settlement in Taean peninsula region is mainly composed with the case retaining the form of dispersed settlement and combining dry-field farming with paddy farming at the existing location of traditional dispersed settlement and the case relocating at the reclaimed paddy farming land different from the existing location, retaining the form of dispersed settlement and combining dry-field farming with paddy farming. Because the many rural areas in Taean peninsula region has been being developed in a state of disorder, the many rural settlements seem to be in a difficult situation like the rapid transformation and deconstruction of origin form. Accordingly, the agglomerated settlement and the dispersed settlement unjquely locating in Taean peninsula region are necessary to be studied systematicly and synthetically. Also, the pseudo-agglomerated settlement and the pseudo-dispersed settlement being presumed to have been formed in Taean peninsula region are necessary to be studied rapidly. In particular, the further studies on the denatured state of traditional agglomerated settlement, the inflow of agglomerated settlement elements into the dispersed settlement and the reappearance of 'proximity between rural farm and cultivated field' principle being considered as abnormal are needed.
