ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the making of Kaisei Nihon Yochirotei Zenzu (「改正日本與地路程全圖」), which was produced by Nagakubo Sekisui (長久保赤水), a Japanese geographer, and to discuss the significance of this map in the controversy over Dokdo islands. To this end, this study looked into the situation of the times in which he lived, his life, and his map making, and the status of Kaisei Nihon Yochirotei Zenzu, which is the subject of this study, in the history of cartography, several versions of this map, and the conflict between Korea and Japan surrounding this map with respect to Dokdo. Furthermore, these conflicts and the significance of this map in the sovereignty of Dokdo have been critically examined. The geographical approach to this map, which has a high cartographic status in Japan, had gained popularity, and is presented on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan regarding Dokdo, can represent much to the sovereignty of Dokdo.
