ABSTRACT

As an emerging concept backed by international organizations and governmental bodies, child-friendly city (CFC) is currently changing our urban characters. CFC is designed to be an ideal city for children by recognizing them as independent agents and providing them with required resources and supports for their development. Despite the concept’s increasing popularity and importance, current discussions are largely limited to institutional, policy, and promotional affairs, lacking substantive research on CFC. Against this backdrop, this article reviews conceptual and theoretical discussion related to CFC from an urban geographer’s perspective, and develops an argument that CFC should become a association is made to insights from urban studies, urban spatial structure, sense of place and place attachment, and children’s geographies and geography education.
