ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to qualitatively analyze students’ experiences of character and competency development through participation in liberal arts physical education classes. The study analyzed reflective assignments submitted by 45 male and female students who participated in a liberal arts physical education volleyball class at A University and conducted in-depth interviews with six students. First, the participants experienced growth in character, including courage and responsibility at the personal level, respect and consideration at the interpersonal level, and cooperation and community spirit at the social level. Second, the participants enhanced multiple dimensions of competency: self-management competency as a basic functional skill; psychological and self-regulatory competencies such as self-efficacy, motivation, and flow; and problem-solving competencies including collaboration, leadership, and reflective thinking. Third, character and competency were found to be positively interrelated in the context of liberal arts physical education. Responsibility was associatedwith self-management competency; empathy and consideration were related to collaborative problem-solving competency; and inclusive community-mindedness was linked to leadership and competencies related to collective reflection. These findings suggested that liberal arts physical education contributed to the development of both character and competency, and that these two domains were in a mutually reinforcing relationship.
