ABSTRACT

This article examines the problematic aspects of the idea that subject-matter must be taught. Since subject-matter is the material of education, not the content or purpose of education, justifying subject-matter does not justify education. Rather, it is right to regard subject-matter as a means for true education. Subject-matter is a tradition selected from among various traditions and cultures. We need to move away from the idea that subject-matter is a wonderful and valuable cultural tradition. Also, the content of subject-matter and the knowledge of subject-matter are not the complete truth. Subject-matter are merely guides to better knowledge. Given the nature of the subject-matter, it is more correct to view it as a means of fostering educational experiences rather than viewing it as something that must be taught. Scholars who study subject-matter education must constantly seek out how subject-matter can contribute to desirable education.
