ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to understand teacher authority infringement in elementary physical education classes not as a result of individual teachers’ classroom management failure, but as an educational phenomenon shaped by the characteristics of physical education and changes in social and institutional environments. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with ten elementary school teachers who had experienced teacher authority infringement during physical education classes, and the data were analyzed through inductive category analysis using NVivo 12. The findings identified five types of teacher authority infringement: surveillance-oriented monitoring, repetitive unjustified interference, challenges to teacher authority, responsibility shifting, and exploitation of institutional procedures. These experiences were closely related to the open and activity-centered nature of physical education classes and the need for immediate instructional judgment. In addition, the reinterpretation of teachers’ instructional decisions after class, school cultures that require individual responses to complaints, and increasing parental intervention were found to contribute to the normalization of teacher authority infringement. This study suggests that teacher authority infringement should be understood not merely as an issue of protection but as a matter requiring reflection on the conditions necessary for the sustainable operation of physical education classes.
