AB - This qualitative narrative study explored the school life experiences of three middle school students identified with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) through the lens of small stories analysis. Students' brief utterances, silences, and non-narrative responses were treated as analytical data to examine where in school settings students narrated their experiences and where their narrations ceased. Analysis of the interview data indicated that in school settings, including classroom lessons, relationships with teachers, and peer relationships, the students showed patterns of brief responses and silences. In contrast, when talking about one-on-one tutoring, special education classes, and out-of-school activities, they offered more specific accounts. In narrating themselves and their futures, they drew the material for their stories from out-of-school activities rather than from school. These observations suggest that BIF middle school students' brief responses and silences are not attributable solely to individual student characteristics but appear together with the conditions of the settings in which their utterances emerge or fall silent. Understanding the school experiences of BIF middle school students, therefore, calls for attention not only to individual cognitive and emotional characteristics but also to the situations in which student utterances arise and pause.
