ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to understand the structure of Christian pilgrimage experiences by addressing the question of what the characteristics and influences of pilgrimage motivations are. To investigate the structure of Christian pilgrimage experiences, a qualitative study based on the constructivist grounded theory of Charmaz (2006) was conducted. A total of 32 people who had made a pilgrimage to Israel in the preceding three years were selected as research participants through theoretical sampling. While research on pilgrimages has tended to emphasize religious perspectives, this study focuses on the aspect of bridging the sacred to the secular, which can be considered to be a new aspect of pilgrimages that cannot be found in the existing studies.
