AB - This study was conducted to examine ethical issues of the economic impact analysis reports of 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The media, which reported positively on the economic impacts of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, cited data from the Korea Development Institute, the Hyundai Economic Research Institute, and the Winter Olympics Organizing Committees. In the Korea Development Institute(KDI) data, we found the case studies from the biased perspective, a lack of income inducement coefficient, inadequate aggregations of the economic impacts of Gangwon and non-Gangwon, exaggerations of the number of visitors due to the Winter Olympics, and non-consideration of displacement effects and opportunity costs. And, the media cited out-of dated data from Hyundai Economic Research institute in which there were the lack of foundation for the figures, the exaggerations of the number of visitors and expenses, inappropriate aggregations of economic impacts of different regions, and the overly optimistic long-term prospects. In addition, there were no rational justification for the figures from Winter Olympics Organizing Committees. Through this study, we hope to promote the ethnicity of public institutions and media and enhance people's right to know, contributing to the society. The tourism industry, which is propelled and operated by taxes, should be an industry that can truly contribute to the economic development of the region and the nation, not to represent the interest of a certain group or to use it as a political tool.
