The complications and sequelae after the mandibular surgery are related to inferior alveolar neurovascular bundles, which pass through the mandibular canal. The knowledge of their positions would decrease the risk of mandibular surgery dramatically and would be used for the development of the new surgical techniques. This study was undertaken to clarify the anatomical position of mandibular canal for the mandibular surgery. Forty four mandibules (23 males and 21 females average 66.5 years) obtained from the collection of Hanyang medical college were studied. The location of mandibular canal in the sections between premolars and molars were measured. The obtained results were as follows; At first, the mandibular canal lay lingual to the distal part of the body of the mandible. It then ran anteriorly and to the buccal part of the mandible between the first and the second premolars. In the sections between premolars and molars, the distance between the mandibular canal and the lower border of mandibular body was 8.9±1.9 mm at the position of the first molar, the distance between the deepest point of the alveolar socket and the mandibular canal was 9.5±3.5 mm at the second molar, which was the narrowest point. The results of this study would be useful to decrease the risk of the mandibular surgery and to develop the new techniques for mandibul surgery in the field of the dentistry and maxillofacial surgery.

advancing age and the process is ordinary endochondral ossification. With respect to the spread pattern of ossification, there are several reports but study about the Korean is negligible. The purpose of this study is to estimate the age based on radiographic analysis of the Korean thyroid cartilage. Dedicated mammography was carried out on 124 specimens of the thyroid cartilage including 76 males and 48 females. We measured 14 qualitative measurements. The results were as followed ; The Ratio of radio-opacity exhibited increasing value with advancing age on both sexes. The ossification began at the posterior border and involved orderly the inferior border, the anterior angle (anterior border) and notch as advancing age in male subjects. We could propose the pattern of ossification for age-estimation in Korean male subjects. Concerning the female subjects, we could not propose the relation between age and the pattern of ossification. In conclusion, we can estimate the age for male subjects by radiographic quantitative analysis of the Korean thyroid cartilage.

Hormesis is the generally-favorable biological responses to low exposures to toxins and other stressors. Radiation hormesis is the theory that ionizing radiation is benign at low levels of exposure, and that doses at the level of natural background radiation can be beneficial. The purpose of this study is to reveal the hormetic effect of low-dose radiation of ionizing radiation on the ovarian follicles of 4-week old female mice. Mice were grouped into control group, 2 cGy irradiated group, 2 cGy and 2 Gy irradiated group (2 cGY pre-exposure group), and 2 Gy irradited group. Mice were sacrificed by cervical dislocation 24 hours after irradiation, removed ovaries, fixed in neutral formaldehyde solution for 24 hours, embedded with paraffin, stained with hematoxylin and eosin and TUNEL immunohistochemically, and observed light microscopically the atretic follicles and normal follicles in various follicular developmental stages. In this experiment, the ratrio of atretic follicles to entire follicles in an ovary increased significantly in 2 Gyirradiated group compared with 2 cGY pre-exposure group, and the ratio of normal follicles to the entire follicles in an ovary in all the developmental stages were increased significantly in the 2 cGY pre-exposure group compared with 2 Gy-irradiated group. These results mean that low-dose radiation pre-exposure can induce the hormetic effect in the developing ovarian follicle.
