ABSTRACT

Women with Disabilities Empathy(WDE) is a social movement organization advocating for the rights of women with disabilities. The organization deeply engages in cultural activities such as writing, choral singing, and theatre. Unlike many social movement organizations that use cultural activities primarily as tools for legislative reform, WDE pursues these activities as ends in themselves, embodying a unique political stance. To interpret this theoretically, the study first examined the cultural critiques of the organization’s members to understand their perceptions of the oppression faced by women with disabilities (Section 2). Subsequently, the theatre practice of WDE is analyzed as aesthetic politics that resists and deconstructs the conventional sensibilities of theatre dominated by nondisabled individuals (Section 3). Furthermore, the artistic activities of WDE are identified as a process of empowerment politics against intersecting oppressions and as practices that build coalitions and solidarity both within and outside the identity category of women with disabilities (Section 4). Based on these analyses, the conclusion comprehensively defines the political significance of artistic activities conducted by WDE.
