AB - This study defines women’s breath-hold diving labor as an analytical category referring to female-centered marine harvesting based on breath-hold diving and compares the digital representations of Jeju haenyeo and Japanese ama, whose labor systems and trajectories of heritagization differ. To examine how the risks of labor, livelihood pressures, mobility, and gendered labor relations that have been backgrounded in processes of heritagization are remediated in digital environments, the study conducts a cross-case analysis of search-based archives—the Jeju Studies Archive and the Mie University Ama Research Center Image Archive—and narrative online exhibitions—Jeju Haenyeo by the Jeju Haenyeo Museum and The Long History of the Women Divers of Shima by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The analysis shows that, in the search-based archives, classification and record-linking structures do not sufficiently constitute individual life histories and labor experiences as independently searchable units. In the narrative online exhibitions, curatorial arrangements reflecting different trajectories of heritagization tend to subsume individual voices into particular value narratives through the sequencing of materials and interpretive convergence. Despite differences among the cases, such selectivity appears in similar ways within each media type, while the values toward which the narratives converge vary according to the political-economic contexts of heritagization in each society. Based on these findings, this study explores the possibility of polyphonic heritage representation, in which multiple memory actors retain interpretive autonomy while remaining mutually responsive. It proposes, as alternative media-specific principles, opening classification systems and relationally reconnecting the divers’ own voices in searchbased archives, and curating nonlinear multiple pathways that pluralize dominant value narratives in narrative online exhibitions.
