Gendered Mobilities: Highly Educated Women’s Experiences of Relocating to Non-Metropolitan Regional Cities for Their Husbands’Academic Careers

ABSTRACT

Drawing on in-depth interviews with seven highly educated married women in their thirties and forties who relocated to provincial cities after their husbands secured tenure-track faculty positions, this study examines the relationship between gendered spatial mobility and occupational mobility in South Korea. While previous research on skilled migration has primarily focused on transnational mobility, this study demonstrates that constraints on women’s occupational mobility are similarly reproduced within the context of domestic migration. The findings show that although the participants experienced diverse career trajectories—including labor market exit, prolonged job searching, extended career breaks, and stable professional employment—they all had to adjust and reconstruct their careers within a gendered mobility structure organized around their husbands’ academic careers. Moreover, labor market flexibility functioned not as a mechanism for facilitating work-family balance but rather as a condition that enabled gendered mobility. By highlighting how domestic migration is shaped by the intersection of gender relations within the family and uneven regional opportunity structures, this study argues that domestic mobility is also a gendered process. It further offers a critical reconsideration of the discourse of work-family balance by demonstrating how it obscures structural constraints and reframes them as matters of individual choice and responsibility.
