ABSTRACT

The United States view of Japan’s role in the region has been consistentduring the past 150 years. Japan accepted the West-dominated internationalorder and its role as a second Japan until the 1930s. Japan during thepacific war was an exception. To the eyes of the Westerners, view of Japanhas been incessantly reinterpreted and reconstituted. After the end of thePacific War, a friendly US-Japan relationship was recovered by the arrivalof the Cold War in Asia while multilateralism was fragile. The US-centeredasymmetrical relations in East Asia including the US-Japan relations havealso been strengthened by historical and territorial problems. Problemswith the United States today concern its inability and ignorance of theneed for revising the existing order. It is likely that the country will not beable to realize its will of maintaining Japan’s status as a second Japan inthe region where inter-state relations have become aggravated with historyissues.
