ABSTRACT

This study examines the causal association between domestic sociopsychologicalindices and Japanese perception towards territorial disputeswith Korea and China. Drawing on triangulation research methods, this article finds a weak causality between the two domains. The logitmultivariate analyses do not support most of the hypotheses except fiveexplanatory variables of age, level of educational attainment, region,Japan's Asiatic identity, and Japan's future projection. These findings leadto two conclusions. First, the conventional cyclical theorem (i.e., status quo →provocation → rise of tension → relaxation of tension) needs to be revised to a moremultidimensional and interactive model. Second, the rising importanceof domestic and international opinions of the disputed territories deservemore careful attention for it serves as a mediating variable determining thepolicy options of tension, status quo and reconciliation.
