ABSTRACT

East Asia has many “Cold War islands” with similar experiences to JejuIsland. Ever since it was conquered in 1945, Okinawa has been occupiedby the U.S. military for over 70 years as a naval stronghold. The Kinmanislands of Taiwan have been transformed into a symbol of the Cold Warafter having been one of the final battlegrounds of the Chinese Civil War,and Yeon pyeong Island has turned into a local psychological war zone inthe post-Cold War era, leaving behind the relative peace and prosperity itenjoyed in the previous years. These islands share a common experienceand identity as Cold War islands. This article focuses on these islands and how the ideals of peace havebeen cast aside, and furthermore contemplates the geopolitical situationsthey face in the context of the emergence and disintegration of the ColdWar in East Asia. This paper calls forth a historical-philosophical reflectionon the transnational violence at the regional level that fundamentallytransformed the regional order and people’s right to life. The mutualunderstanding and solidarity of these Cold War islands may emerge asa small but significant factor in promoting peace in East Asia, but morediscussion will be needed to understand how to bring this about.
