Where is the Social Economy for community of Japan Going in East Asia?: the Challenges of Japan

ABSTRACT

There has been a consistently growing interest in the Japanese model among Korean scholars as one of the sustainable approaches for social economy in East Asia. The purpose of this study is to investigate on the social economy for the communities in Japan. Based on the previous research, the Japanese way of a social economy is developing on the diverse sectors such as the non-profit sectors. Under the influence of the Neo-liberalism and Globalization, classical provider have been urged in market place to develope a new role of a social economy. Because the concept of social economy has been complicated by diverse sectors, it may be the diffusion of the concept that has led to the difference from Japan. Ground on this concept, it is most likely that such notions may be different to Korea and Europe including concepts such as social business(ソーシャル・ビジネス) and community business that are easily identified in Japan. According to the case study, it includes the attributes of concepts of self-perpetuating, community, atypical system, bottom-up in the Japan society. Based on analytical results and its implication for Korea, the author suggests that the model include civil society, bottom-up activity by the citizenry, and Japanese-style community-oriented approaches in East Asia.
