ABSTRACT
Studies on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Korea have developed with the incremental institutionalization of ASEAN and its growing strategic importance. The development of ASEAN has contributed on the formation of regional identity in Southeast Asia. ASEAN Studies are expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of Southeast Asia as a single entity by bridging traditional disciplines and area studies.
This article aims to draw the characteristics of ASEAN studies in Korea by reviewing academic researches published in various forms including PhD dissertations and MA thesis, journal articles and books. It is discovered that several factors including the establishment ASEAN community, East Asian regionalism, ASEAN-Korea relations have also encouraged ASEAN-related studies in Korea. ASEAN has increasingly attracted a wide range of research groups beyond the traditional IR approach. Greater institutional support and academic attention are needed to explore “ASEAN studies” beyond policy studies.
