ABSTRACT

This study examines the construction of transnationality among thirdand fourth- generation Chinese residents in South Korea by analyzing their perceptions of China, Taiwan and South Korea. Unlike their ancestors, the new generation feels comfortable with the Korean language, society and culture. They are constructing a transnational identity while they have regional migrations and experience South Korea, Taiwan and China differently. Through such cross-border experiences, these new Chinese residents of South Korea elucidate upon the multiplicity and changes in oversea Chinese and exemplify a minority group that connects with more than one country in East Asia. Finally, this study suggests such transnationality among the Chinese residents in South Korea as a representative case of inter-Asia identity, which contributes to expanding our understanding the diversity of minorities that alternatively connects Asian countries and cities.
