ABSTRACT

1939 is a special year when not only the Harbin orchestra carried out a Japanese concert tour, but also the Japanese New Symphony Orchestra began its first abroad tour since its establishment. Therefore, two concerts performed by foreign orchestras were held in Kyungsung in 1939. It seems not to be a coincidence but related to the Second Sino-Japanese War which began from the beginning of 1939, a new phase with the unprecedented defeat of the Japanese. This can be conjectured because the Harbin orchestra was sent to Japan as a “Japan-Manchukuo Anti-Communism Art Delegation” in order to propagate anti-Communism. This study explores the political and cultural meanings of the concert tour of the Harbin orchestra and the reactions of Korean musicians after the concert in Kyungsung in 1939.
