ABSTRACT

Indonesia has been well on its way to become a full democracy and showed steady economy growth since the 1997-1998 Asia financial crisis, which severely hit not only Indonesia’s economy but also its politics. Since then, Indonesia has established direct electoral system, in which citizens can directly elect their president, governors, mayors, and district heads. It seems that Indonesia is one of the most ideal countries where democracy, Islam, and modernity can thrive together harmoniously. The country is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority democracy and under the principle of “unity in diversity,” other religions have long co-existed peacefully. The recent 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election (Pilkada DKI) campaign, however, has cast doubt on its reputation for religious tolerance and cultural diversity. The 2017 Pilkada DKI was one of Indonesia’s most polarizing elections. Within this context, this paper analyses the Pilkada DKI with a focus on blasphemy, post-truth, and identity politics.
