ABSTRACT

This article defines nuclear nationalism as the discourses that explained the historical and strategic value of North Korea’s nuclear weapons through colonization memory of the Korean Peninsula, and examines the background of the formation of such nuclear nationalism. North Korea’s nuclear nationalism came under the internal and external conditions of North Korea in 2005 when socialist patriotism was promoted to strengthen the legitimacy of the Kim Jong Il system and nuclear declaration was announced. In the discourses of nuclear nationalism, North Korea’s nuclear weapons symbolized sovereignty, independence, and new external relations as a nuclear power. Statements that presented nuclear weapons as a symbol of sovereignty and independence appeared in May 2005, and those that emphasized the effects of nuclear weapons on new external relations, such as the status of a great power, appeared in July 2005. These findings suggest that nuclear nationalism in North Korea is closely related to the efforts to maintain the legitimacy of the North Korean system and consists of contents to achieve those goals.
