ABSTRACT

This study examines how North Korean So˘njo˘nhwa style has been formed and changed since the 1950s in terms of creation and techniques. So˘njo˘nhwa started as a ‘poster’ or a ‘graphic’ that shared an international aesthetics of socialist art. However, as North Korea has developed its own art theories since the 1960s, So˘njo˘nhwa has transformed into a unique genre that has its own form and style. The leader’s instructions and party policies that appear in the New Year’s Editorials of the Workers’ Newspaper (로동신문) , have been more actively adapted and reproduced through the slogans of So˘njo˘nhwa. Three major stylistic transformations are observed every 20–30 years: text-centered ‘p’osu ˘t’a (포스타) ’ evolved into a form with more images and slogans in the 1950s. A style based on the theory and techniques of Choso˘nhwa had been established in the 1970s and in the 2000s, computer techniques had been incorporated in the creation of So˘njo˘nhwa. Examining the status and changes of So˘njo˘nhwa, which transmits the most political messages and prevails in the most common everyday life of North Koreans, will be useful to understand the aesthetics and meaning of this unique genre.
