ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between China’ s platform companies and state governance. The study analyzes what issues were inherent in the process of developing platform companies, and how the Chinese government managed these problems. The results of the study are as follows. First, platform companies competed for user acquisition in the name of continuous development, and this competition caused monopoly issues. Second, the platform companies who sold financial products, were seen as disturbing or challenging the existing financial system centered on state-owned banks. Third, the data collected by platform companies was recognized as a matter of national security. These issues were managed through legal and policy institutionalization by the Chinese government’s market, financial, internet, and security authorities. Fourth, the Chinese government utilized authoritarian political and administrative power in the process of governance.
