ABSTRACT

This study borrows the insight of the desakota concept in analyzing the urbanization of North Korea after Kim Jong-un came to power in 2011. The policy emphasis on the spatial linkage between villages and cities in units of counties and the process of rural urbanization with the construction of rural dwellings and greenhouse farms at the forefront, which is currently being developed in North Korea, leaves much room for interpretation in terms of ‘North Korean-style desakota’. This article is expected to be effective in interpreting North Korea's urbanization by borrowing the critical mind of Terry McGee, who criticized Western urban studies that were obsessed with the urban-rural dichotomy. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to conceptualize the concept of desakota in the context of North Korean cities, and to provide an epistemological foundation to extract the dichotomy between city and village, which has been hindered in capturing the spatial dynamics of North Korean cities. The study also aims to contribute to expanding the horizon of the existing discussion on desakota regions of Asian cities through the North Korean-style desakota, which reveals the aspect that ideological and regime differences significantly affect the formation of desakota.
