ABSTRACT

Since the 21st century, various topics have been combined with domestic research on Mount Paektu. In 2013, Mount Paektu recorded the highest number of studies in terms of quantity. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of synthesis of the views of Mount Paektu from the outside. To fill this missing link, this study synthesizes and discusses the research on Mount Paektu in the Anglosphere. First, the studies produced by the Anglosphere have linked Mount Paektu to its cultural identity including shamanism and the rulership of the Kim family in North Korea. Second, the studies have focused on how Mount Paektu, as a borderland, which has been a source of geopolitical conflict between South Korea and China or North Korea and China. Third, several Anglo-American historiographies have focused on the pre-modern Korean and Qing dynasties’ debates over Mount Paektu and the surrounding borderlands. Fourth, Anglosphere researchers are also interested in the variety of geographical and cultural information found in nineteenth- century foreign travel accounts of Mount Paektu. After categorizing Mount Paektu studies from the Anglo-American perspective into these four areas, the author proposes a unit of analysis, the East Asian region, to arrange new Mount Paektu studies.
